The Digiconomist Bitcoin Energy Consumption Index (BECI), a dynamically updated measure of how much energy the Bitcoin network consumes annually, is reporting record levels not observed since 2018. The index estimates that Bitcoin mining is consuming 73 TWh per year. An index launched by researchers at the Cambridge Centre for Alternative Finance estimates the figure to be 63 TWh. The index launched by Cambridge was designed to update every 30 seconds and also to address some design limitations noted by researchers critiquing the Digiconomist index. Regardless, both figures are recording record energy levels which correspond with the all-time highs recently observed in the hash rate deployed on the Bitcoin network.
