The latest of several cryptocurrency mining malware cases identified this year has been uncovered by cybersecurity firm Varonis. The malware, coined “Norman”, uses the open-source XMRig software to mine Monero from infected servers. One mid-sized was successfully attacked by the malware. In this case, the malware spread to almost every device and server in the company’s network. The malware uses a host of tactics to avoid detection. For example, the malware automatically closes malicious processes when users open task managers. The mining pool mineXMR have been noted to ban the address connected to the virus.
