Mixed Reactions to New Research Estimating Bitcoin Electricity Consumption

Research published on the 12th of June in the journal Joule estimates that Bitcoin mining accounts for 0.2% of global electricity consumption. The estimation was derived from analysing the data included in the IPO applications of Bitmain, Canaan, and Ebang. The research has received mixed reactions with some questioning the reliability of the data. The study is published shortly after an analysis by CoinShares estimated 74% of bitcoin mining is sourced from renewable energy.
