A report published by cybersecurity firm Guardicore Labs revealed that Chinese hackers managed to breach up to 50,000 servers to mine cryptocurrency. The attackers managed to breach administrator accounts of MS SQL Servers via brute force attack. This approach repeatedly tries different passwords and was successful due to weak the poor password protection of some of the targeted accounts. The attackers chose to mine Turtlecoin with the computing power from the breached servers. Turtlecoin is a lower capitalization cryptocurrency with privacy features.
